What is egg donation?
In some cases, eggs from another woman (donor) may be needed. The donor is matched in physical traits to the recipient couple. She is given injections to stimulate the formation of multiple eggs. Her eggs are then retrieved & fertilized with sperms from the patient’s husband by IVF. Fertilized egg is placed in the womb of the wife, who then carries the pregnancy.
Which patients need donor eggs?
In elderly woman after 40 who do not have adequate number of eggs in their previous treatment cycles.
In Postmenopausal woman who wishes to conceive.
In a young woman with premature ovarian failure.
In woman in whom there is a risk of transmission of diseases if she has her own biological child.
In woman who have undergone cancer radiotherapy/chemotherapy.
In woman who has a poor ovarian response in her previous IVF cycle.
Is it safe to use eggs from donors?
The donors are young healthy women, who have been tested for infections like AIDS, HbsAg etc.
